Where would you go if you could go anywhere in the world? What if you could choose your "Top 5 Bucket List Locations"? Get ready to plan an amazing adventure to these five locations!
Phase I: PREPARE
1. Choose Groups: Carefully choose your group to work with. All groups must have 2 or 3 students. Before you begin the project, view the Leadership Self-Assessment and share which quality you find the most challenging. Brainstorm ways you can hold each other accountable to be great group members. At the end of this project, you will complete an individual Leadership Self-Assessment about your personal contributions to the group.
2. Create Shared Folder: Have one person create a folder in your Google Drive that is titled "Gr5 Unit7 PBL - your names". Share the folder with everyone in your group and have them add the folder to their drive. Also share this folder with Ms. Townsend: [email protected]. All documents you create for your project should be saved in this folder!

Phase II: PLAN
3. Plan and Design: "Make a Copy" of this Planning Sheet to keep in your Gr5 Unit 7 PBL folder on Google Drive. Carefully plan your pillows by following the instructions on the planning sheet.
4. Teacher Conferences: Throughout the planning sheet, you will notice the phrase "Teacher Initials", which is a STOPPING POINT for you to check in with Ms. Townsend. Do not interrupt a small group, but you can check in with Ms. Townsend any other time during Math Workshop. If Ms. Townsend is working with a small group when you are ready to conference, take a break from the PBL to work on something else until she is available. Do not move on to the next part until you have met with Ms. Townsend.

Phase III: CREATE
5. Create Map: On large grid paper, you will recreate your map to scale using the coordinate grid. (Ms. Townsend will supply paper).
6. Informational Writing: On Google Docs (save in Unit 7 PBL folder), write an informational essay explaining the steps you took to create your map (this will be displayed next to your map in the hallway). Include:
7. Wow Factor: After completing all requirements, what else can you do for your WOW factor?
Ideas (NOT REQUIREMENTS):
- Label the x and y-axis and write 1-20 on both.
- Watch this video to see how an artist uses a grid to enlarge an image. You will be doing a similar process using a coordinate grid. Plot your border points first in pencil, then lightly sketch your map to scale.
- After the whole map is drawn, plot your 5 Bucket List Destinations on the coordinate grid. Lable the five coordinates (x,y) and write the name of the destination.
- Color your map, x and y-axis, and labels so they are easier to see. Name your map at the top and write your names.
6. Informational Writing: On Google Docs (save in Unit 7 PBL folder), write an informational essay explaining the steps you took to create your map (this will be displayed next to your map in the hallway). Include:
- Include transition words to show the order that you did each step.
- Drescribe how you chose your five locations and why you want to visit each one.
- Explain the difference between the x and y-axis on a coordinate grid. How did you use them to determine the coordinate pairs of each point?
- Explain how you used a grid to enlarge your map on a piece of paper.
7. Wow Factor: After completing all requirements, what else can you do for your WOW factor?
Ideas (NOT REQUIREMENTS):
- Create a post card from each of your locations. Draw a picture of a place you would visit on one side and write a note about your experience on the other. Attach this to your map near the coordinate pairs for each location.
- Choose one of your locations and create another map of all the specific places you would visit in that location. Be sure to include everything you need for quadrant I (title, x axis, y axis). Include coordinate pairs of each of the places you would visit in the city.
- Create a budget on Google Sheets to show how much it would cost to visit each of these places. Include airfare and hotels. How much money would it cost to go on your Dream Vacation to all 5 locations? Which destination would be the most expensive?
- What ELSE can you do to go above and beyond?
Phase IV: REFLECT
8. Group Project Self-Assessment: The Group Project Self-Assessment is at the end of your Planning Sheet. You and your group members will fill this out TOGETHER. Please use complete sentences to evaluate your work. Be specific about your work. Show how many points you deserve for each category, then calculate the score you think you deserve.
9. Leadership Self-Assessment: "Make a Copy" of this Leadership Self-Assessment for each member of your group and save them in your PBL folder for this unit. It will be completed INDEPENDENTLY. Please be honest and provide quality self-reflection. The purpose of this is self-improvement.
